Budd Bay Glass Blower- Ryan Brailey
September 8th, 2015 by Jay Fratt
Ryan Brailey is an expert glass blower from Washington State. He and his buddy Wolf, run Budd Bay Glass. Ryan has been blowing glass for 11 years. Ryan first became interested in glass blowing when he visited a soft glass studio at nine years old with his grandmother on the Oregon Coast. Before he graduated from high school he had his first torch, and it’s been a great flaming ride ever since. He spent a number of years after high school searching for someone to teach him how to blow glass and finally found that instructor in Ivan Schwartz of Fire and Earth. After a year of apprenticeship with Fire and Earth, he formed his own glass blowing company with his buddy Wolf, which they named Budd Bay Glass after Budd Bay in Olympia, WA.
Ryan primarily blows inside out glass pipes with frit glass. Fritted glass is finely porous glass through which gas or liquid may pass. It is made by sintering together glass particles into a solid but porous body. Frit glass is essentially crushed colored glass that is combined with regular glass tubing to create a look with three dimensional depth.
All of Ryan’s hand blown glass pieces are thick and stylish. Ryan also creates a cool beaded stamp to each piece he makes so you know it was made him. His nick-name is Rydogg, so each piece he makes is branded with a Paw Print bead. Even his smallest pieces have the Paw Print bead.
SmokinJs is proud to carry Budd Bay Glass and feature Ryan’s creations.
